Back online after all these years...

31 May 2026

I have just turned 80, and as a wonderful birthday present my son Mark has rebuilt my old website and brought it back to life. The original was built back in the 1990s and never did work on the mobile phones everyone seems to carry these days.

The banner at the top is from the original site, and we have kept much of the old look and feel, but now it works beautifully on both your computer and your phone. It has been an absolute delight to wander back through the hundreds of different designs I developed over the years.

More than anything, I would love to reconnect with old friends and customers. If you are still smoking your Zeman pipe, I would be thrilled to hear from you and to know how it is holding up after all these years. Please do drop me a line.

Smoke in peace,
Jan

News from the workbench...

Finally it's Mimmo's turn...

Since my return in 2004 I was storing batch of Plateaux purchased from well known Italian briar cutter Romeo Domenico, known to many as "Mimmo". I decided to season it well as they are very special blocks and they deserve the best treatment I can give them.

So I decided its time to carve some special pipes and I hope my friend Mimo will not be disappointed. Bellow is the result of first small batch carved from his Plateaux...

Mixing with the angels...

Angelika "Superia"
Angelika "Superia"
Stunning Freehand, shape and grain...

Well almost..."Angelika" is one angel of a pipe. Freehand with stunning grain and fitted with hand cut Cumberland stem with white Delryn tenon for smooth action.

Its double stained with Gold over Walnut and the result is very pleasing.

The bowl is coated with my Pumice/Charcoal formula for extra protection and ease of break-in.

I wish I have more briar like that as it is pure pleasure to carve from it...

Fine resolution indeed...

Resolution "Superia"
Resolution "Superia"
Stunning Classic, Acrylic stem...

I don't think the straight grain gets much better then this. Thanks to "Mimmo's" cutting skill, the grain is evenly spread all around the bowl and the final result is awesome.

I double stain it to lift the grain even further and the pipe is fitted with Acrylic stem in Ivory color. The band is white Acrylic and the stem has white Delryn tenon for perfect fit.

The bowl is again coated with my Pumice/Charcoal formula. The pipe is light and well balanced for its size...

It was a pleasure to carve this pipe and I hope someone will really enjoy it...

The run of the bulls...

El Torro "Extra"
El Torro "Extra"
Stunning horned shape with grain to match...

We like Spain and our last trip in 2004 was no exception. The country has special spirit in the air, mixture of fine dust and history and of course the famous run of the bulls adventure for these with strong legs and brave harts.

It was with Spain on my mind that I carved the "El Torro". Combination of cross grain and longer then usual stem to provide smoker with cool smoke sets this pipe apart.

Stained in dark overtones to match the mood it is one of my favorite pipes and I would be happy to add it to my collection...

Been fishing again...

Corinna
Corinna
Nice Blowfish with plenty of birds eyes...

Well not realy, but the Blowfish is always pleasure to carve and the "Corinna" made my day as it turned out almost flawless. The birds eyes are great and plentiful and the hand cut stem in combination of German Ebonite and Acrylic worked out well.

Light pipe which fits well into once hand, and as any Signature pipe is fitted with the Delryn tenon and coated with my Pumice/Charcoal formula.

If you've been waiting for a Blowfish, your wait is over, great pipe and reasonably price at that can be yours...

Just add a hole...

Pupurina
Pupurina
NZ snail, nice grain, stunning birds eyes...

Not as easy as "just add water" recipe, but close. Modification of original Pupurangi worked out well and I must say I like the finished result.

It's also smooth with nice cross grain and birds eyes on the top of the bowl. Long, hand cut stem will provide you with cool smoke and the pipe is very pleasing to the eye.

So if you'll be bit faster then a snail, this "snail" can be all yours...

Special offerings...

News from the workbench...

Season's break behind me, I am back at the workshop carving away and you can check me new pipe additions here or on my site. This time of the year business is usually bit slow due to the fact that most pipe smokers slow down a bit during the winter months and things should pick up again as warmer weather approaches.

Down under we had great summer this year and I enjoyed my pipes outdoors for most evenings. I'll be going away for few weeks in our old trusty caravan to do bit of fishing and relaxing while it's still warm, so if you see any pipe you might want to buy, if you let me know straight away, I should be able to dispatch it before we leave...

Let's twist again !!!

Boticelli "Extra"
Boticelli "Extra"
Freehand with a twist...

Last "Spiral" sold very fast and I had people calling and asking for some more, so I did carve "Boticelli". Very nice straight pipe with bit of a Classic look. It is finished in attractive Walnut stain and complimented with hand cut Acrylic stem in black with thin red line running trough it. It compliments the bowl rather nicely and the finished pipe has classy look about it.

The stem features white Delryn tenon for smooth fit and the bowl is coated with my Pumice/Charcoal formula for extra protection and ease of break-in...

All in all, wery nice "Signature" Extra pipe...

Fluid Briar...

Pepper "Extra"
Pepper "Extra"
Large Freehand, nice grain, hand cut stem...

I alway enjoy carving flowing shapes and "Pepper" was no exception.

Carved from large block of Plateaux the lines are smooth and curvy with nice air about them. The grain is spread evenly around the bowl and the pipe is finished in Walnut stain. The stem is hand cut from high quality German Ebonite and the bowl is coated with my Pumice/Charcoal formula.

Very nice pipe to appeal to wide range of pipe smokers...

Bugger !!!

Argona
Argona
Simply stunning and affordable...

Well that's exactly what my wife said when I told her I will not be getting away from number of small sand pits which popped up during the final sanding stage.

The pipe is simply stunning to be sandblasted or carved so I left it smooth and I think you will agree that it was the right thing to do. The grain is even around the bowl and what a grain it is, just have a close look. And it looks even better in person.

When I first inspected the block of Italian Plateaux I was certain this will be high end "Signature" pipe, so you can imagine my disappointment when I came across the pits :-(
But I did finished the pipe and am happy with it. It's finished in Orange over Walnut and the Acrylic stem is fitted with New Zealand Greenstone band for over whole visual balance.

I did reduced the price accordingly and I hope someone will enjoy the pipe as it is...

Natalie
Natalie
Small brandy glass "Signature" with great grain...

I had so many inquires about "Natalie" and all of the people were after non filter pipe. Unfortunately the pipe was 9mm filter pipe. I've thought that it's a good idea to have at least one filtered pipe on hand, but I was proven to be wrong.

So finally I did block the shank and re-drilled the pipe to be non filter pipe. Because of the alteration I did reduce the price and you can have the pipe for $300 rather than $365 which was the original price.

The work is fully guaranteed and the pipe is good as before. The Acrylic stem has white Delryn tenon and the original straight grain is very tight and even.

Simply great pipe for great price...

Hodula's & Kloucek's...

There are couple of Klocek's pipes and plenty of Hodula's still available and all the people who purchased one in the past are very happy with them.

They are good pipes for the money and I can higly recommend them. So have a look and see if any will speak to you...

Season's Greetings !!!

New Sea Shell available...

Roseus Green
Roseus Green
Sea Shell shape sandblast, hand cut stem, nice balance...

After some time finishing all the back and special orders I had a great time carving small batch of Sea Shells.

I like carving an unusual shapes and the Sea Shells remind me of all that time I've spent walking on the beach collecting them. They are unique to New Zealand in shape and diversity.

I like the rustic look of them and they are light in weight and smoke very well, so if you are after pipe that will turn heads it would pay to check them out on my site...

Snail in Tan and Green...

Pupurangi Tan
Pupurangi Tan
NZ native snail in sandblast, hand cut stem...

Pupurangi's shape is based on native New Zealand snail of the same name. It is a large and well rounded snail and one of the protected species in NZ bush.

As with the Sea Shells, it comes in two colors, Tan and Green and the pipes are fitted with hand cut black Ebonite stems.

It is a medium sized pipe and fits nicely into hand and is comfortable to hold. With longer then usual stem the smoke is nice and cool...

Nerita holds its own...

Nerita Green
Nerita Green
New Sea Shell shape sandblast, hand cut stem...

Another Sea Shell shaped pipe is Nerita and it is a true upright design which many of you are used to.

This one is finished in Yellow over Green and together with hand cut black Ebonite stem provide smoker with not only unique visual feel but with nice balance as well...but I love them all, so the final choice is up to you :-)

Kloucek pipes...

This is a large and very nice freehand and would suite smoker with larger hands. Most of Kloucek's are gone, but there are still some nice ones left, so if you are after one, check my site, you'll find them under the Friend's Pipes category...

Hodula's still here...

I have a good selection of Hodula's still available and there are some very nice pipes to be had, so please check them out, they are great smokers, good lookers and possibly the best value for hand carved pipes...

MERRY X-MASS & HAPPY NEW YEAR...

I would like to wish you all great Christmas and very Happy New Year. I hope you'll find the pipe of your dreams under the X-mas tree and will enjoy it despite some very cold weather in Northern Hemisphere. I will think of you all while sitting on the beach and enjoying the sun :-)

Thank you all for your support, and I look forward to your company and friendship in 2008...hope we'll all have a awesome year !!!

Introducing Jan Kloucek

New friend and carver...

Well I had a great time in Europe and during our travels met with few new carvers who also become my friends. One of these is Jan Kloucek from Czech Republic.

He works from rather large workshop in small village close to Prague. Jan has considerable experience and is well known for his unique and high quality hand made pipes not only in his native Czech Republic but also abroad.

His pipe design is amazing, with high level of details and very nice stem work. All pipes are hand made and some include hand cut stems as well, both in Ebonite and Acrylic.

He is proud of his knowledge of both, briar and carving techniques and strives for perfection in all his designs. He pays an extra attention to grain and turns to architecture and nature for most of his design inspirations. His philosophy is that exclusive pipes should bring pleasure and satisfaction to even the most demanding pipe smokers.

His grades are VO, VS, XO, VSOP from which VSOP is the highest grade.

His pipes are as unique as they are beautiful and I am proud to be able to bring his pipes to you, and I know you will love them and enjoy them as much as I do...

The above pipe, Kloucek 01 is simply stunning, displaying beautiful straight grain around the bowl and simple lines of timeless Classic,,, must be seen to be fully appreciated...

Freehand with a bend...

This is beautiful Freehand with some great grain on the side of the bowl and interesting shape, featuring bent stem desing. Well balanced pipe and sure head turner. It is fitted with Acrylic stem...and of course should smoke like a dream...

This is a XO class pipe.

Twist and turn...

Freehand with a twist or should I say knot :-) This is certainly shape which will start few people thinking and it is the first pipe I've come across to be carved to this particular design. It has nice grain as well and is fitted with hand cut Acrylic stem in ivory color with some interesting black stripes.

It is well balanced and if you hold your pipe in left hand, will fit you like a glove...and the pipe is in VSOP class...

Simply stuning...

Another stunning pipe, this time in offset square shape and just look at the grain. Even straight grain all around the bowl and even more noticeable because of the four sided shape.

The pipe is fitted with Acrylic stem and is aslo in VSOP class...

More Hodula's added...

I've received new batch of Pavel's pipes and as usual there are some very nice pipes in there.

This particular pipe is a 1/4 bent with an excellent grain and is fitted with black Vulcanite stem...beautiful pipe...

Nice and solid...

Medium size chubby 1/2 bent pipe in typical Hodula style. This pipe would make ideal outdoor pipe with its solid design and feel...

50/50...

Great combination of smooth and rustic finish is evident on this lovely slightly bent Apple shaped pipe. Good grain on the upper half of the bowl is nicely offset with earthly rustication...I love it.

There are many more of Pavel's pipes on my site, so if you have the time, go and check them out, you might find one or two which will speak to you and as always, they are good value for the money...

Back in the workshop...

Well all good things must come to the end and so did my time in Europe and Japan and I must say I am happy to be back at my bench. I still need to finish few overdue back orders, but you should see some new pipes to be posted shortly...so keep an eye on my site from time to time and I thank you all for your support while I was away.

Been fishing...

It's been a long time...

I must say it's been a long time since my last Newsletter and it surely proofs the theory that "times flies". It went rather fast for me, starting with X-mas holidays, followed by our kids visit and then I seemed to be busy carving couple of batches of pipes for the shops.

But all that is behind me and I had time to carve few nice pipes and I hope you'll like them...

Went fosil hunting again...

Trilobite "Signature"
Trilobite "Signature"
Wine glass shaped "Groovy" Bulldog...

And came up with another "Trilobite" this time in Signature class. It's the shape of tall wine glass, the grain is great and the top is covered with gorgeous birds eyes. And the pipe is clean with not a pit in sight :-)

I must say that I am string to like the effect of colored stems in pipe design. If applied correctly and to the right pipe shape they certainly look good and provide the extra excitement and element of beauty especially important to younger pipe smokers. I think if we as pipe makers like to retain or even expand the current market, the younger pipe smokers will play increasingly large part in that strategy.

The dark blue Acrylic stem is hand cut, features white Delryn tenon for smooth fit and has a thin white line running trough it. The large black Acrylic flange ease the transition between the bowl and the stem.

Inside the bowl was coated with my Pumice/Charcoal formula for extra protection ans ease of break-in.

This is a large pipe and with deep grooves for extra cooling will provide you with comfortable and pleasant hold and cool smoke...

Been fishing...

Bueno
Bueno
Blowfish with Cumberland stem...

Well not literally, but have spent time carving couple of Blowfish pipes and "Bueno" is one of them.

Fine looking Blowfish shaped pipe fitted with hand cut Cumberland stem. Orange over Black contrast nicely with the coloring in the Cumberland stem and the bowl has plenty of birds eyes and cross grain. Again the tenon is white Delryn for smooth action.

Inside of the bowl has been coated with Pumice/Charcoal formula for ease of break-in and an extra protection.

Nice "Signature" class pipe for the price which will not break your pocket...

PS: While writing this Newsletter the "Bueno" found it's new home in Chile and I trust will bring lot's of joy and happiness to its new owner

The second catch...

Carola
Carola
Blowfish with Acrylic stem...

The second Blowfish is also great, sporting lot's of birds eyes and some cross grain. It is fitted with hand cut colored Acrylic stem. It is finished with my new Chocolate stain and I selected the Acrylic colors of Coffee Pearl with red line to match. I think the effect is pleasing to the eye...

It started it's life as another Signature class pipe but at the end did not quite get there, hence the hand cut stem and white Delryn tenon, so if you always wanted good quality pipe for less then premium price, than this is a pipe for you...

An evening magic...

Terralis "Extra"
Terralis "Extra"
Cross grained beauty with Acrylic stem...

I love this pipe and its almost Classic shape, while still retaining some Freehand magic. This is a very nice Evening Pipe or pipe for that special time out.

The cross grain is simply stunning and the pipe is fitted with extra long Acrylic stem sporting white Acrylic flange. Of course the white Delryn tenon helps with the smooth insertion of the stem, and the chamber is again coated with my Pumice/Charcoal formula.

Nice Signature "Extra" pipe which will bring you years of pleasure and satisfaction...

For the astronomer in you...

La Luna "Extra"
La Luna "Extra"
Straight grain, hand cut stem, beautiful pipe...

Another Signature "Extra" pipe with magic of its own. Straight grain, unique shape, balance and good looks, what more you can ask.

I do enjoy more and more carving pipes with flowing shape and you will see more and more of them coming out of my workshop in the future.

Fitted with black Ebonite stem this pipe will be a pleasure to smoke...

Filtered Brandy...

Natalie
Natalie
Small brandy glass "Signature" with great grain...

The smaller sized pipe in Brandy glass shape with lovely straight grain and fitted with black Acrylic stem. This is a only filtered pipe I've carved for some time, so if you are using filters this is the pipe for you.

White Delryn tenon is drilled out to take 9mm filters and the chamber is coated with my Pumice/Charcoal formula.

Classic shape in Signature class...

For the Bargain Hunter...

Casanta
Casanta
Eight sided bowl, nice grain and hand cut Camberland stem and great price...

It is a puzle for me to see that this pipe is still here so I've reduced the price from already low $285 to $250 :-)

This pipe was destine to be a Signature class pipe, it has good straight grain and hand cut Cumberland stem, but during the final sand few small sand pits popped out. Therefore the rusticated carving on the front of the bowl...

But for my money, it's a beautiful pipe and will smoke like a dream, so if you want a BARGAIN very close to Signature quality, be fast as I feel this pipe will finely move...

Trip to Europe...

Well I'll be taking bit of a spell from my carving as we are due to depart for Europe straight after the Easter Holidays.

The time has come again to go and stock up on my pipe making supplies and to catch up with my friends and perhaps make a few new once :-)

Even thought that we are flying via US and will spent few days in and around San Francisco, the Chicago Pipe Show is as elusive as ever and the timing and the extra expense just wont make the trip possible. I need all my money for the supplies...so Chicago perhaps next time.

Talking about the money, I must thank you all for your generous support during the last year and if you are in the position and need to buy a new pipe before our departure on 10th of April, your contribution will be very much appreciated and the money be put to good use of extending my carving when I come back in five months time.

Please order pipes available from my site even in my absence, they will be dispatched with the help of my friend and the orders which can not be completed will be rewarded when I come back...thank you all.

Season's Greetings...

SEASON'S GREETINGS...

My self and all my family would like to wish you Merry Christmas and very Happy New Year...

I would like to thank you all for your suport during the past year and I look forward to your company in 2007...

I hope your pipes will burn steady and bright and keep your spirits soaring high, and if you find yourself too deep in the snow, please send some our way...

Best wishes

Jan, Vera and family

New Hodula's

Latest Hodula's are here....

I had received the last batch of new Hodula's pipes for this year and they are available for Christmas delivery when ordered on or before the 11th of December.

There are some very nice pipes in this batch and I will show you few of them here, but please visit my site and check them all if you have time as I am sure you'll find one or two there which might appeal to you and they are very affordable.

This medium sized classic has some nice grain all around the bowl. It is light and well balanced for its size and the light stain works well with the black Vulcanite stem and metal band.

This is a nice Hodula pipe and will smoke like a dream...

I like the grain and the band...

This is a nice Apple shaped pipe in rather chubby version. I like the grain which is even around the bowl.

The black Vulcanite stem is fitted with sandblasted alloy band, which is interesting and unique design feature.

The birds eyes on top of the bowl are great. Couple of tiny pits do not distract the eye from the grain.

Lovely pipe...

Bulldog for you...

I love this pipe, but then I love all Buldogs. This one is very large and chubby with good grain and very clean look.

I like the short stem fitted with Alloy band and to me this is a attractive pipe...

Halve and halve...

I love the contrast between the top of the bowl and the bottom sandblasted section. The blast has real earthly feel to it.

The pipe is of large size, but not too big and will be good smoker. The black Vulcanite stem is fitted with very nice and interesting Allo band, nice pipe indeed...

Large and beautifull...

What a pipe and what a size. This is very large and beautifull pipe indeed. The shape and grain works together with amber colored Acrylic stem and is fitted with an Allow band.

If you like large 1/2 bent pipes, then this pipe is for you...

Sandblast at last...

This is a large sandblast with interesting finish and almost organic feel to it. The Mahagony color suit it nicely and the pipe is fitted with black Vulcanite stem.

Good combination of large size, interesting finish and saddle stem all comming together in this large pipe.

There are couple of sandblasts available and these are the first blasts I have recieved from Pavel so if you like them you'll be the first to smoke them...

Christmas delivery...

If you like the new Hodula for Christmas, or any other pipe from my site, you need to order them on or before the 11th of this month. If you can do it sooner, please do so as the post office will be very busy during the last days before the holidays and I hate to disapoint you.

Please check the rest of the additions from my site and I trust you will find one or two for you :-)
