SEASON'S GREETINGS...

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Let me wish you all Merry Christmas and very Happy New Year. Looking at the global scene, it certainly was a turbulent one for many people. Continuing war in Iraq, tsunami in Indonesia, cyclone in New Orleans and threat of Bird Flu, lot of people had a hard time and certainly need for good pipe smoke to relax a bit.

So let's hope next year will be calmer, with less disasters and violence and that all of us will live in peace and greater understanding of one another. End if the old humble pipe will help to achieve it, then all of us should light up and help others to do the same...join the pipe club and we will all be better for it :-)

I thank you all for your suport of my carving during the year and I am looking forward to our frienship next year...

New

Roseus Green
Roseus Green
Sea Shell shape sandblast, hand cut stem, nice balance...

After almost a year in design I finally finished three "Sea Shell" pipes. Two of the shapes and the names, the "Roseus" and "Nerita" are based on New Zealand sea shells found at the beach and the "Pupurangi" on native New Zealand snail.

"Nerita" is vertical design and "Rosues" horizontal one. Both have long hand cut stem which is very open for easy draw and features sliding tenon rather then "military style" tapered fit into the bowl. I am in no favour for fitting which utilize tapper as it is hard to avoid the gap at the end of the tenon. With push fit, there is absolutely no gap to trap the condensation and therefore pipe will smoke drier. It is also more secure.

I have experimented with new green stain which I mix myself to achieve the "old shell" look and finally settled for combination of green and yellow which gives the best shell like look. Some will also be stained in more traditional dark brawn colour, but I must say the green / yellow combination is striking.

The "Pupurangi" shape is rather chubby and based on the shape of native Kauri Snail, name being Maori. It is fitted with the same long hand cut stem as the "Sea Shells" and will also come in the two colours and possibly in variety of sizes.

They are available from my site right now and I have a feeling that they will prove very popular and that I will need to design more of them...

New batch of Hodula's arrived...

I was lucky to secure another batch of Hodula's pipes and they arrived just in time for X-mas.

As usual, there is wide variety of shapes and sizes to please almost any taste. Last two batches attracted plenty of interest and positive comments and sales were brisk, so I would suggest you go and check what's available and if you see some you like don't think too long and just buy them. They are good smokers and all can be had for reasonable price considering that they are all hand made.

Pavel would also like to wish you the best for the coming festive season and would like to thank you for your support of his carving. He is always working on new shapes and I hope we will see some nice pipes coming out of his workshop next year...

Coming up, or what's in the pipeline...

I am working on another addition to the "Sea Shells" and this time design is based on the Seahorse shape. Don't worry Trever, the shape is completely different and even the name. It will be called "Manaia" which is Maori for Seahorse. It looks like two of us have telepathy between us, to be working on the same design, but I must admit you've beaten me to it. With the end of the year rush I will not finish "Manaia" until early next year :-(

The other and even more exiting design is based on the native NZ bird called Fantail, "Tirairaka" and as it is hard to describe the shape of both pipes, you'll need to wait until I finish them both early next year...

Life is good...

Skiing season is over...

Well it has been a very warm winter...hardly used any heating in our house, but still the snow was falling on the ski slopes and even though our local field had only 40cm of the stuff we enjoyed it very much.

Our grandson from Melbourne paid us a visit last week and we spent some time with him at Mt Hutt ski field a short distance from Christchurch. He was extremely lucky as the field received an additional 30cm of new snow on his arrival and we had beautiful sunny days with hardly any wind and Harley enjoy himself. At 14 years of age he is a natural and will be a good skier by the time he's 16...

High Grade YPSC Club Pipes available...

After the first run of this year's Club Pipe I've had a bit of time to carve few higher grades for members who might be interested in purchasing a higher quality pipe.

I have three YPSC 2005 high grades available and they are beauties...two with nice grain, one with spectacular birds eyes. They are discounted the same way as the standard Club Pipes and therefore represent great value for the money.

So if you are after high grade pipe, check them out and if you have any questions just let me know...

Sandblasts are in again !!!

Yes there should be sandblasts coming out of my workshop again :-)

I've gained access to great blasting set-up with powerful compressor to give the ability to produce nice deep blasts. And even better news is, that I do not have to get dressed in a "diving suit" to do it...so keep checking the "Sandblast" category on my site from time to time as new blasts will be added on a regular basis...

Couple of blasts sold even before I had time to put them up on my site, but I have couple of Club Pipes available in blast finish.
One is a pipe from last year, finished in nice Walnut over black, a real looker and the other is this year's pipe finished in black...

Both pipes are nice pipes indeed and as they are the only blasts I've ever done in the YPSC Club Pipes series this represents an opportunity to purchase a unique pipe. Both are available from my site, the 2004 pipe was added just now...

More

Cape Lark
Cape Lark
Nice chubby little bulldog...handy for your small pocket

The "Latitude" range was extended by two new models, "Cape Lark" and "North Wind".

The "Cape Lark" is a delightful little Bulldog pipe, just a pipe for your small pocket and great to smoke outside while pottering around your garden or in your car on the way to work. In my experience, the Bulldog shape pipes are hard to find these days and not many factories produce them any more or in very limited numbers. I was therefore pleased when I located this little beauty and can now offer it to you.

The other, "North Wind" is 1/4 bent pipe in larger size than other "Latitude's" and has a bigger bowl capacity as well. So if you are after a budget price pipe with big smoke capacity, this is the pipe for you.

I have change the stain on the full range of "Latitude's" from spirit to water based to make them more organic then ever. I've also introduced the bowl coating as a standard feature and I think they are looking real smart and smoke even better than before.

If you are after an affordable pipe which will give you clean and natural smoke, easy draw, try any of the "Latitude's" and I know you will come back for more. I am told by many of my customers, that they are best pipes they smoked for the money they ever come across...

Blow or not to Blow...

Neptune "Superia"
Neptune "Superia"
Stunning Blowfish...birds eyes galore

I've carved few Blowfish pipes and what an experience it was. I really enjoyed myself and relized just how beautiful and stunning these pipes can be.

The "Neptune" has such tight and stunning birds eyes that it must be seen to be believed. No picture will ever do justice to this pipe and not until you've seen the pipe in person and feel it in your hand will you fully appreciate it's beauty.

I doubt that I will ever find such a perfect block of briar to carve pipe like that again. It is certainly one of my great "Signature" pipes and I am proud how it turned out. Fitted with hand cut Cumberland stem with hand turned white Delryn tenon, this pipe will smoke like a dream. The walls are reasonably thick for the Blowfish shaped pipe and the pipe will remain cool as long as you'll not abuse it.

This is a gem of a pipe and I will be sorry to see it go :-(

Blowfish in

Zara
Zara
Blowfish with natural Plateaux side...

Beautiful birds eyes on one side and natural Plateaux on the other with bowl in the partial twist :-)

It is very light pipe and I had fitted Delryn insert inside the mortise for smooth stem fit, just an experiment to see how well it will work. It works just fine so I have option to either do that or or use the Delryn material as a standard tenon.

The hand cut Ebonite stem feature Sterling silver band and its open for an easy draw.

As I've said the Blowfish pipes a fun to carve and you will see some more of them comming out of my workshop in the near future and some might be sandblasts as well. So if you always wanted nice, light, well balanced Blowfish pipe and one which is reasonably priced, please check out "Zara", it might just be the right pipe for you...

Cross grain and birds eyes aplenty...

Bruno "Extra"
Bruno "Extra"
Cross grain and birds eyes aplenty...

Another popular shape...already sold a couple and people are asking for more.

This "Signature Extra" pipe has plenty of cross grain and birds eyes, is very light for its size and the shape is just right to hold and balance in my hand.

The "Bruno" is fitted with hand cut black Ebonite stem with white acrylic band and white Delryn tenon for silky smooth action. The bowl is bare, but can be coated upon request. As a matter of fact, I am asked to coat more and more pipes with the Pumice/Charcoal formula and its getting to the stage that I might decide to start coating all of my pipes. The taste is completely neutral, the coating is very thin, and the pipe has the "finished" look...

New pipes

Grading System introduced...

Dorado
Dorado
How is THIS for freehand, just look at that cross grain and birds eyes, verey, very nice pipe indeed...

On demand and after lots of thought I have decided to introduce a Grading System for my "Signature" pipes.

The "Signature" pipes are the best I can produce at any given time and they are purchased by serious pipe smokers or collectors. It is the collectors market I would like to develop further and the Grading System will help me to do so.

People who'd like to purchase the high end pipes can at glance compare the pipes in the same grade category and they can be sure they are getting the pipe of the quality and specs they are after.

The "Signature" pipes grades are as follows:

"Signature" range of $350-$450 will have a Signature stamp, "Signature Extra" range of $450-$550 will have a Signature stamp + E, "Signature Superia" range of $550-$650 will have a Signature stamp + S, "Signature Ultima" range of $650plus will have a Signature stamp + U

I will be grading all existing "Signature" pipes on my site shortly and any new pipes will be graded before placing them on the site.

I trust the Grading System will be appreciated by all and will making your purchase decission easier.

If you'd have any comments to the above, please drop me a line...

I was busy last two weeks :-)

The Hunter "Ultima"
The Hunter "Ultima"
"Signature" pipe with a twist...best yet...

I had this stunning piece of horn sitting on my desk for some time, waiting for an inspiration as to what to do with it and suitable block of Plateaux to merry it to...

It finally happened and I am happy with the result, "The Hunter" and I hope you'll be too. The horn shape pipe is perfectly suited to be decorated with a horn stem and both the briar and the horn compliment each other nicely.

The briar is flawless and I design the stem in a way it can be removed as any other stem would. Normaly the piece of horn is glued permanently to the shank, the crown of the horn facing out and the stem is fitted inside the horn. I do not like that arrangment as the balance and the look is rather lopsided. I think the crown of the horn should face the bowl and that what I've done with "The Hunter".

I think it is a rare pipe, due to the quality of both the briar and the horn, I certainly don't have another like it and until I locate one, I don't see any possibility of another Hunter comming out of my workshop anytime soon...

Still the Gods are with me...

Ripley "Superia"
Ripley "Superia"
Classic in straight grain and hand cut stem...

I don't know why, but the briar was running nice and sweet last two weeks. Never I had so many "Signature" pipes sitting on my bench awaiting finishing as in last two weeks...I hope this will last bit longer...

I like the shape and balance on "Ripley" and the briar is just stunning with straight grain all around the bowl. Hand cut stem with Delryn tenon, all machined, not pre-cast insert and easy air flow really makes this pipe special.

Double stained to lift the grain...simply collectors pipe at affordable price...

Third time lucky...

Utah "Extra"
Utah "Extra"
Delicate frehand with handcut stem...

Very light freehand Poker pipe also with perfect straight grain and nice balance...smokers delight this one...

Fitted with hand cut stem sporting horn band to ease off transition between black stem and the lighter briar...

All the "Signature" pipes have bare bowls and can be coated with my Pumice/Charcoal formula upon request, just let me know when you place your order...

They are selling like a hot cakes...

I've reveived one more batch of Pavel's pipes and they all've been added to my site, so if you've missed out on the pipe in the first shipment, go and check them out...there are some nice pipes still available and at the prices what they are you can afford to buy more then one :-)

This is what customers who got their pipes have to say about them:

Hi Jan,

I received the Hudula pipe today. I'm impressed. It exceeded my
expectations by far. I'm very happy with all aspects of the pipe. I just
finished slowly smoking a mild cubed burley throught it to start the
break-in process. Thanks!

Kind Regards

Rod

They were all well recieved and I will continue to work with Pavel to bring them to you as they'll become available...

Out they go...

YPSC 2005 Club Pipe
Freehand Cobra shaped pipe, parly rusticated, black Vulcanite stem with silver band...

YPSC 2005 Club Pipe

YPSC 2005 Club Pipe available now...

YPSC 2005 Club Pipe
YPSC 2005 Club Pipe
Freehand Cobra shaped pipe, parly rusticated, black Vulcanite stem with silver band...

I did not want you to be waiting too long for the new YPSC Club Pipe this year so got busy and design this year model couple of month before then in the past.

This year model is design around my Cobra shape with few modiffications and addaptation of the Sterling silver band. The pipe is of larger size, but fits the hand nicely and is well balanced and light as the sides are narrow.

It is fitted with black Vulcanite stem sporting the Sterling silver band with YPSC logo and pipe number in the limited series of 100.

Early reports indicate that it will be very popular, maybe more so than previous club pipes and you can order it from my site or simly click on the pipe image in this Newsletter.

The pipe is prized at US$145 until the end of August 05 and than it will go up to US$160, same as all the other YPSC club pipes. This is to reward "early bird" customers with bit of a saving and to avoid long wait for orders to accumulate.

If you want this year YPSC Club Pipe, please place your order for one as soon as you can, you'll save money and get early number, which is allocated on "first come" bases. It was a pleasure to design this year pipe again and I thank you in advance for your support...

It's all it the lines...

Linea
Linea
Flowing shape, beautiful grain and hand cut Cumberlain stem...

I've tried many times to produce pipe with as simple lines as possible and few of the earlier attempts end up in my fireplace...which is going everyday since we are in the middle of winter down here...but I feel that finally I've struck the correct balance between lines and the final shape which is pleasing to the eye and comfy to the hand...

Resulting "Linea" is carved from Plateaux by Mimo (Italy) is fitted with hand cut Cumberlain stem with Delryn tenon for smooth fit and I hope you'll agree it is a feast for the eyes and not bad price either :-)

DVD's available now...

The popular pipe video "Pipes, Bike and Lot's of Blue Smoke" is now also available on DVD and you can play it in your DVD player or computer. The quality has been improved and the presentation is much nicer.

For people with no DVD player, the movie is also available on VHS tape and you can order both from my site from the VIDEO section.

The video covers all aspects of pipe making, from briar harvest in Spain to individual carvers and pipe factories and if you do not know much about the subject it will open your eyes and you'll be suprised how complex and involved pipe making really is...

Hodula Pipes

Introducing new pipe range...

Hello my friends,

I am happy to offer you a new range of pipes, most of them in a large or Magnum sizes.

The pipes are made by friend of mine in Czech Republic. His name is Pavel Hodula and he works from small town in the north part of Czech Republic. His pipes are well known and purchased mainly by tourists visiting Prague and Karlovy Vary.

I?ve met with Pavel during my last trip to Europe and was impressed with what he is doing and the quality of his pipes. His pipes are truly hand made as his workshop is very small and his tools very limited. Apart from drill press and polishing wheel, all his work is done by hand. Lot?s of filling and sanding and it is a slow process.

Anyhow, as Pavel has no access limited to Internet and has no credit card processing facility, I?ve decided to help him with marketing, and have therefore placed some of his pipes on my site and would like to ask you to look at them and if you like what you see, buy one or two. They are very reasonably priced, quality is good and they are great smokers.

They are all large, or very large pipes, some Magnum size, and are fitted with both, Vulcanite and Acrylic stems.

His pipes are listed on my site under the Friends? Pipes and I hope you will like them and will support Pavel?s carving and will come to enjoy some of his Magnum sized pipes?

Hodula 01...

A nice pipe, this is a large freehand pipe with part Plateaux top, fitted with Pearl Acrylic stem, great looker...

Hodula 02...

If you like a very large pipes then this Magnum sized 3/4 bent freehand pipe, eight sided, with nice grain is for you. This pipe is fitted with Acrylic stem...

These are just a couple of Hodula's pipes...more on my site

New Pipes

Coating question and answers...

Thank you to all who sent the e-mails back to me with their views in regard to the bowl coatings.

It looks like there is an even split in the opinions and in the light of that I will offer the coating as an optional extra. All my pipes are made with bare bowls and at the time of purchase it is up to each customer to say if they would like to go with the bare bowl or they preffer the coated one.

That way I should be able to please most people and also avoid the issue of being accused of trying to hide pits and other nasties under the coating. It is sad that some people thing that way, as I would think that most of top carvers would never do this in the first place...after all it takes many pipes to build the reputation and only one to loose it...

New freehand

Bonita
Bonita
Great freehand pipe, with shape and grain working together, real looker...

I love carving freehands, having the freedom to create completely unique shapes, following the grain and seeing the pipe which I had almost no idea existed, comming out of the block...it always fascinates me.

"Bonita" was carved from block of Plateaux I found in the workshop of Jean-Perre Soler in Spain. One side was split by an axe at early stage, particuliar process unique to Jean-Perre. I do have few more blocks split that way, and I am sure they will become exciting pipes in due process.

I left bit of the rough split surface on the bowl as it compliments nicely the natural Plateaux surface on the top of the bowl. There is some very nice straigh grain all around the bowl and the shape helps to bring it out even more. The botom of the shank is covered with bird eyes and the pipe is fitted with an Acrylic stem.

The inside of the bowl is coated with Pumice/Charcoal mixture for ease of breaking-in and bit of extra protection just in case you are hot smoker.

This "Signature" is nice pipe indeed and will make some pipe smoker out there very happy, so have a look at my site and check it out, it could be just the pipe you are looking for...

!!! CLICK ON THE PIPE PHOTO, TO ACCESS PIPE VIEWER WITH MORE DETAILS AND ALL SIDES VIEWS !!!

My latest...another freehand, another

Another freehand, another "Signature" and if you love bird eyes, then this is a pipe for you, just look at the right side, its absolutely covered with nice tight bird eyes...

The shape is freehand, with perhaps bit of Danish influence and the pipe has nice feel to her and bice balance. Stem is hand cut from high quality German Cumberland and fitted with white machine Delryn tenon for smooth fit and strong connection...the effect of the coloured stem and bird eyes is just stunning...

I left the bowl bare and the pipe is well opened inside for easy draw. It will be a pleasure to light this pipe or keep it on display as a virgin :-)

Music to your ears...

Musico
Musico
Horn shaped pipe with nice grain and simple lines, real gem...

Did not carve horn shaped pipe for a long time, so i thought lets put it right and the result is "Musico". The horn shape is about simple but perffect lines, they seem to be easy to carve, but oposite is true...
The "Musico" is fitted with hand cut black Vulcanite stem from German stock and sporting white Delryn tenon for perffect fit. It has interesting even grain all around the bowl, the upper part of the bowl is hand carved and the inside is coated with Pumice/Charcoal mixture for pleasant smoke right from the first bowl...

It was going to be my third "Signature" pipe, but the gods decided otherwise, hence the carving, so you end up with an excellent pipe for the excellent price, hand cut stem and all, just don't wait too long, I have a feeling it will sell rather quickly...

One alteration...

Zeus
Zeus
This is a unique pipe featuring beautiful natural Plateaux top and hand cut stem... What a pipe this is awesome...

Well I had a "Zeus" on my hands for some time and I thought why is not selling, it is beautiful pipe, and was going to keep it for myself and then I thought, maybe it is the stem...

So I took the plunge and cut new black Vulcanite stem for it by hand, and it made a huge different, it just feel like the pipe is completely new...

I also reduced the price a bit, so with new hand cut stem and better price it must be in your WANTED category for sure :-)

HOW TO VIEW PIPE DETAILS !!!

Some people did not know that you can access all around pipe photos when using the pipe viewer on my site...so let me explain.

When you open the page for any given pipe on my site, you will see the pipe viewer which will show the main pipe photo with a pipe and lighter in the foreground. Just under there are 6 pipe symbols and when you run your mouse pointer over them the view will change to side, top and bottom views.

If you are on slow Internet connection please allow some time for the images to load and if you have any problems at all, please let me know...

Bowl coating question, new pipes

To coat or not...a milion dollar question...

The question of bowl coating ? it is probably the most controversial question any pipe smoker would ask, and I dare to say the answers would be as controversial as the question. Ask 10 people and receive ten contradicting answers.

So lets look at the problem in details, and I would attempt to provide few answers and be as open to the issues as I can.

First of all let me tell you my reason why I?d like to talk about the issue at all. After all my pipes carved until now came without any coating at all and all were what we call a ?bare bowl?, and I receive no complains what so ever about any problem with breaking-in of my pipes from any of my customers. It seems, that all of you who ever purchased pipe from me were very happy to break in new pipe and put up with any discomfort and bad taste for the first 6 or so bowls until the thinnest of cakes would develop and taken the sharp edge of burning briar away. All pipe smokers either know that this is to be expected or do not find a need to experiment with other possibilities, or at the worst possible case, they would had really bad experience with coating from smoking cheap factory made pipes.

So what would change my mind and put me on the way to coat the bowls on my pipes?

We to come straight to the point, it was my last trip to Europe and my visit to workshops of their top carvers, like Rainer Barbi, Tom Eltang and Bo Nord. To my surprise, most of them would coat inside of the bowls. It was very discovery for which I had no immediate answers, but the fact is that you almost can not buy top quality pipe with bare bowl, unless you specifically order one. One has to ask, why would that be? Why would most of the top carvers coat their bowls?

And fact is that coating would do more for the pipe, then to make it easier to break-in. It would first of all and foremost provide the protection for the bowl not only against accidental burn out, but also general protection of briar surface against burning tobacco, which can generate good amount of heat, make no mistake about that, and the un-coated pipe in the hands of fast smoker is accident waiting to happen which would ultimately be placed at the door of the carver and claimed as faulty workmanship.

The second issue is the taste during the breaking-in period. We all do it and put up with it, but surely if there was a better way, most of us would avoid it. Well there is and the answer is, quality bowl coating.
While in the workshop of tom Eltang in Copenhagen I was fortunate to be given formula for coating which consist of parts of pumice and charcoal. I did modified the formula slightly to suite my taste and the result is completely natural and neutral tasting coating which I am happy to apply to all of my pipes. It is nice and coarse and the surface will aid to better cake attachment and therefore help you to build even cake faster and easier.

I figured if all of these great carvers use it with all of their experience, then there must be more to it then just cosmetic reason. And even that is another argument, as coated pipe seems to look better and somehow has the finished look about her.

So the question for me is?should I coat all of my pipes or not? And we are talking coating perfectly finished tobacco chamber, not one where I would try to hide something, which is completely out of the question in any of my pipes. So far I will coat some of my pipes and see what reaction will be from all of my customers. Also I can ask any prospective clients who did place an order for one of my pipes, if he likes to have the coating applied. I have no problem with that as all of my pipes come of my bench with perfect ?bare bowls? and leave the final decision in his or her hands.

If you have any say on above matter I would very much like to hear about it and you can e-mail me at jan@zemanpipes.com

Latest aditions to my site...

Grande "Extra"
Grande "Extra"
This pipe is all about lines and balance and I hope you'll agree with me when I say its a real beauty...

I had this beautifull block of Plateaux from Mimo sitting on my bench for some time, turning it in my hands while having a smoke or my coffee break (I have too many of these, I know) and finaly I cut into it with resulting pipe called "Grande"

I wanted a pipe which would have a strong lines and good balance. I wanted a pipe into which I will put everything I learned during my trip to Denmark and Sweden and you will be the judge when you put a match to its bowl...:-)

I like the flowing lines, the stem was hand cut from the best German Vulcanite and the grain is even all around the bowl. The tenon is machined from solid rod of Delrin and the stem is open to improve the air flow. The pipe is finished with Carnuaba wax over light Walnut stain.

I hope this pipe will give lots of pleasure to the person who will own and smoke her...

The pipe I carved on the day my Granson was born...

Well to be honest with you, I carved or better say completed two pipes on this very special day and I hope I'll be forgiven the fact that I kept one for me :-)

Anyhow the additional "Bruno" is a lovely freehand pipe. The shape is new to me and I like it very much and hope to add it to my range of shapes. If you like 3/4 bent pipes, this could be pipe for you. Great balance, light for its size and finished in light orange stain which really brings out the grain.

It also has my new bowl coating and will be easy pipe to smoke, right from the first bowl...

De Lux LOTR available...

Thorrin de Lux
Thorrin de Lux
Same shape as standard Thorrin but with smooth bowl and darker finish...

Once again I have one Thorrin de Lux pipe available. The photo is of actual pipe, so you can see what you are buying.

The De Lux version of my Thorrin is very popular and hard to come by. This one is finished in very dark Walnut stain with black under tones, has a smooth bowl and rusticated stem. The pipe will "sit" and they are good smokers providing you with cooler smoke due to the shank extention.

So if you are waiting for one of these then you wait is over :-)

Zeus
Zeus
This is a unique pipe featuring beautiful natural Plateaux top and hand cut stem... What a pipe this is awesome...

Well I've done it...after having "Zeus" here for some time and thinking, why its still here, after all it is such a nice and unique pipe? Having a reall close look at the pipe, I thought hey, maybe it is the stem...

And since my return from Denmark with great heap of German Vulcanite in my baggage, I decided to cut a new stem for it.

So there it is, a re-born "Zeus" sporting hand cut stem from top quality German Vulcanite, completely different shape then the old one and WOW, what a difference it has made. If I would not have the old stem still here I would not believe it.

If you ever had your eyes on "Zeus", go back and check it out now and I hope you will like what you'll see...and all this extra stem work for no extra dollars, it must be great buy, guaranteed :-)

A second make-over

Casanta
Casanta
Eight sided bowl, nice grain and hand cut Camberland stem and great price...

It certainly looks like I had a "new stems" week. Must be the high from either all this new stock of quality stem material or this expectation of being turned into Grandad in very near future :-_

Anyhow I did re-cut a secong stem for one of my older pipes and it is also dramatic transformation to say the least. There is no hiding the fact that, hand cut stems are in the category of their own and they bring life to the pipe which no other stem can do...

New stem is cut from top quality German Cumberland, is slightly longer for cooler smoke and more open then the one before. The pipe is also no filter pipe, so go ahead and grab yourself well seasoned pipe with hand cut stem and my new bowl coating for enjoyable first bowl experiance... :-)

Little beauty...still here

Amelia
Amelia
Delightfull small Apple shape pipe with an excellent grain...

This is a pipe which was tucked away in obscure part of my site, so I decided to brink bit of extra attention to it, as I am sure it deserves it...

Carved from good Italian Plateaux, it is well seasoned by now and will provide you with excellent smoke you will just keep on enjoying for ever.

Finish and grain are both stunning and the pipe is very, very light with great balance and it is really looking for loving oner this very minute... :-)

I AM A GRAND FATHER...:-)

And very happy one at that...well just look at him, only thing missing is the pipe, and that will come with time I am sure...

Little bundle of joy was born on 4th of May 2005 in Wellington, New Zealand and my son Mark and his partner Katie are very, very proud parents indeed...

Bruno is going well and I named one of the pipes above after him as it was carved on the same day he was born.

Only thing for me now is to celebrate...:-)

Cuxhaven Pipe Show

Cuxhaven Pipe Show...

After six months of preparation we were finaly in Germany, heading north to attend the Cuxhaven Pipe Show...Click on the photos for larger images and captions

Cuxhaven is a small town on the Northen coast, not far from Hamburg. Getting there was no problem as we had a small car and apart from me getting me back out of kilter when stoping for coffee the jurney was without problems. The chiropracter had my bad disc back in the place next day and the only pain was me seeing all this lovely tobacco I could have for the Euro 40 what he charged me...

Rolf Osterndorff kidly put us up in a small cabin in his place and after exploring the town we went to tha hall to set up the table. This was my first pipe show and I tell you when I saw how many tables there were, and all of them covered with pipes, I started to wonder how they all going to sell...

But its not all about selling...

Its also about having fun...and fun we had, believe me :-) We met some very interesting people, pipe carvers from all over Europe, USA and Japan and I've learned lot about art of pipe making just by talking to them and checking their pipes. They were all great and help and advice was shared by all.

Bjorn Thurmann is well known pipe maker from Denmark and very easy to become friend with. Unfortunately we ran out of time and could not visit him in his studio at Copenhagen, at least we have a excuse to come back again...

No discrimination here ...

You all know Anne Julies and it was indeed pleasure to meet up with her. One could not find more open and happy person anywhere...she is not only great pipe maker but also painter and splits here business activity equaly between these two passions... She is a great woman not only as an artist, but also human being, and the meeting was great experiance for me and I hope for Anne as well...

Her pipes are simply awsome...

Anne had a number of pipes on display and I was suprised in their size differences. Some were small and some very large. She had a very large "Leg" pipe on display which would be perhaps 8" long, with beautiful grain and finished in gold over black stain. It later sold to gentleman from Wiena...

You can see another smaller version of the "Leg" on the enclosed photo in upper right corner...

Party time...

Ofcourse... after hard day there must be time to relax and under pretence of exchanging ideas about different aspects of pipe making for some, and the official tasting of German beer for others, we continue into small hours of the morning...at least some did :-)

And then it was all over...

As they say...all the good times must end and so did the Cuxhaven show.

After three days some of us stayed bit longer to watch the finish of "Tall Ships" race, me and Vera packed up the car, said thank you to Rolf and headed to Denmark.

But that's another story for next Newsletter...in the mean time be happy and enjoy your pipes...

Hope you've enjoyed it...

I hope you enjoyed the show, it was certainly pleasure for me to attend and I am sorry that Rolf had to cancell this year show. I wish him all the best, hope he will over come the obstacles and be in position to organize another show in 2006 or 2007
